For simplicity sake, we are going to go with TL 10 Reactionless Thrusters for our predominant space drive.  Look on page 38 of GURPS Vehicles - Second Edition for the details.

The term "reactionless" is a bit of misnomer, but it is commonly used.  These thrusters are actually a form of gravitic drive.  By manipulating gravitons, the ship is able to provide thrust without having to provide reaction mass.  All that is necessary is a sizable amount of energy and units known as thruster plates.

These drives are usually located to the rear of the ship or out on pylons as they tend to create an ionization field around them.  The Thrusters tend to glow when energized.  The more power applied, the brighter the glow.  When enough power is applied, the ion field can excite gases in contact with the thrusters, causing what appears to be flames, but is really just charged plasma.  Think of when the Millennium Falcon blasted out of Mos Eisley spaceport.
